Conference « Mellah of Marrakech, History, Memory, Architecture and Human development »

On the 19th of March 2017, Association Mimouna organized at Laazama Synagogue, which is located within the walls of the Jewish quarter of Marrakech, a conference regarding the history, the memory, the architecture and the human development of the Mellah of Marrakech. This event, which has taken place weeks after the royal tour of king Mohamed VI in Marrakech, falls under the perspective of following the footsteps of His majesty in order to revalue the historical patrimony of the Mellah. Through this initiative, Association Mimouna hopes to introduce this patrimonial wealth to a national and international audience.

The conference composed of a panel that was divided into 4 axes presented by experts who gave lectures and answered some questions related to the history of the Mellah, its human development, its typical architecture as well as its memory. This historical quarter remains an emblematic symbol of the presence of a large Moroccan Jewish community across the country.

On this occasion, Association Mimouna  has inaugurated the interactive pavilion installed inside the synagogue. This space includes LCD touch-screen format that would allow tourists and the inhabitants of the Mellah to visit and find out more about the Jewish Moroccan sites in 3D accompanied by a brief explanatory text about the history of the sites. This space, which utilizes technology at the service of education, also includes interactive visual and sonorous materials that would allow the visitors of the synagogue to listen to selections of the Judeo-Moroccan music while reading the biography of the singers. Association Mimouna hopes that this interactive pavilion would disseminate the Moroccan history to the Moroccan youth of all cultural and socio-economic backgrounds and turn the synagogue into a cultural center contributing to the revitalization of the Mellah.
