Jaco zafrani : Mellah Soccer Tournament Celebrates Moroccan Jewish Heritage

As a strategy to preserve multiculturalism and highlight the richness of cultural and religious diversity in Morocco, the Dakira project, a USAID-funded project which is implemented by Association Mimouna and four other Moroccan NGOs, has decided to organize a Mellah soccer tournament which allowed teams from the once Jewish quarters of Fez, Marrakech, Rabat and Essaouira to meet and compete while also learning about the history of cohabitation and togetherness in their neighborhoods through soccer.

The teams of the four cities adopted the name of old Jewish Moroccan soccer teams and wore recreated retro soccer jerseys of the Moroccan Jewish teams from the 50s and the 60s. Through Soccer, Association Mimouna strongly believes that game will notonly efficiently and fruitfully contribute to the peaceful coexistence of allpeoples, regardless of race, language, or religion, but also helps in safeguarding the memory of Morocco’s Jewish heritage.
