FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Association Mimouna ?

Mimouna is a Moroccan cultural, non-profit association founded in 2007 by young Muslim students at Al Akhawayn University (Ifrane). Its purpose is to promote and preserve Jewish-Moroccan heritage and to foster lasting friendship between Muslims and Jews.

Why is the organization called “Mimouna” ?

The name comes from Mimouna, a festive Jewish-Moroccan celebration held the evening after Passover, when Jewish families traditionally invite their Muslim neighbours to share food and music—an emblem of Morocco’s shared cultural fabric.

What mission and values guide Mimouna’s work ?

Mimouna aims to reclaim and strengthen Morocco’s plural identity by:
- Preserving tangible and intangible Jewish heritage;
- Educating Moroccan youth through heritage days and school activities;
- Countering intolerance via interfaith dialogue;
- Acting as a “citizen-patriot” voice for cultural diversity.

Who can take part in Mimouna activities and events ?

Mimouna designs its programs for Moroccan students, educators and the general public; initiatives such as the Moroccan Jewish Caravan explicitly welcome “both fellow students and the general public,” while Jewish-Moroccan Heritage Days target high-school and graduate students nationwide. Everyone committed to Morocco’s plural identity is invited to participate.

What impact has Mimouna achieved to date ?

In its first 18 years, Mimouna has delivered over 250 educational and cultural events across Morocco and abroad, inspiring thousands of participants and helping pass Jewish-Moroccan heritage to a new generation.

How is Association Mimouna funded ?

Mimouna is a registered NGO sustained by individual benefactors, institutional partners and project-based grants.
